Visit to the large sewage treatment plant at the mouth of the Saar in Konz

Due to the high demand, the action group “Lifelong learning, actively passing on knowledge” organized a tour of the large Saarmündung sewage treatment plant in Konz for 42 interested people on September 10 and 11, 2024, which is a model for the latest technology in the sense of promoting water purification and environmental protection.

Due to the size and topographical location of the Konz municipality, a large network of pipes (approx. 350 km) must be maintained for wastewater treatment and several wastewater treatment plants and 31 pumping stations must be operated. The treated wastewater is returned to the natural waters.

During the tour, participants learned interesting facts about how the sewage treatment plant works, for example about mechanical and biological cleaning. The connection between the sewage treatment plant and the heating of the town hall administration building and the sewage canals that run under the Saar were also explained.

At the end of the tour, everyone agreed that they had learned a lot about this “everyday topic”.
