Educational trip to the European Parliament
to Strasbourg on October 6, 2022
As part of the series of events "United in diversity - discovering and understanding Europe", the partnership for democracy in the VG Konz in cooperation with the action group "Lifelong learning, actively passing on knowledge" organized an educational trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on October 6, 2022.
The European Parliament is the only directly elected body of the European Union and therefore the voice of all Europeans. Since the institutions of the EU are still an abstract structure for many people, and little is known about their tasks and organization, this educational trip was a particularly good opportunity to expand this knowledge.
During the visit to the European Parliament, the participants received an interesting lecture on the powers of the legislature and the role of the Parliament in the legislative process at EU level. They could also put their questions directly to the Vice-President of Parliament, Dr. Katarina Barley, and find out about her parliamentary work.
Afterwards we went to the visitors' gallery of the plenary hall, where the course of the plenary session and the voting procedure could be followed live in the exciting atmosphere of the largest transnational parliament in the world. Afterwards, the interactive permanent exhibition "Parlamentarium Simone Veil" was visited before continuing to the city center of Strasbourg.
After the lunch break, the participants explored the picturesque old town of Strasbourg as part of a city tour and learned exciting details about the eventful history of the Alsatian Rhine metropolis. On the way home, the impressions of what they had experienced after a long day of excursions were exchanged.
