What is happening with the Ratskeller in Konz?

At the end of February 2025, the tenants of the "Ratskeller" restaurant in the Konz town hall building ceased operations. The goal is for a new tenant to be able to offer traditional home-style cuisine in the premises again in the future. Therefore, the municipal council cleared the way for a feasibility study at its recent meeting. This study will identify the structural measures that could be used to renovate and remodel the premises in a future-proof manner, and the cost involved.

Many legal requirements have changed in recent years, for example, regarding fire safety and accessibility. While the previous tenants were protected, a new tenant must meet the new requirements to be allowed to operate. Therefore, the premises must be brought up to the latest technical standards. A lot of work would have to be done in the kitchen, staff rooms, and restrooms in this regard, while also taking into account the preservation of historic buildings.

All of this won't happen overnight. While the administration has been in contact with experts since last year to assess the scope of the renovation, since public administration is bound by procurement law, the feasibility study now approved can, as a first step, delve deeper into the planning, propose solutions, and even determine a cost framework.

Mayor Joachim Weber: "The Ratskeller is an important factor for a lively Konz, also due to its central location on the market square. We want to make the premises attractive – not only for a new tenant, but also for our citizens. I am confident that the feasibility study will help us plan the necessary steps to achieve this."
