Around 6.2 million euros in funding for the monastery area in Konz-Karthaus
Konz, January 24, 2025
State Secretary Simone Schneider presented the mayor of Konz, Joachim Weber, with a grant of around 6.2 million euros. The money from the federal-state program "Social Cohesion - Social City" will be used to support the development of the monastery area.

Last year, the first construction phase of the monastery was largely completed. This included the outer shell, a new coat of paint in historical colors and the replacement of many windows. The scaffolding will be dismantled in the coming weeks.
Planning for the next construction phase is already in full swing. This includes work on the interior of the monastery. The aim is to make the monastery a place of encounter - including a community center, barrier-free access on all levels, multifunctional rooms and a new emergency staircase for the ballroom. After the tender, work is expected to begin in the second half of the year and be completed by the end of 2026 at the earliest.
"The development of the Karthaus monastery is an enormously important project for the city of Konz. In addition to the structural renovation and redesign, the new conception of the content as a future community center for all residents of the city is particularly important. A place for meetings, culture, education and clubs is being created here, which will further strengthen the cohesion of the citizens. My special thanks go to the committed team for the excellent cooperation and to the ministry for the trust. Without the financial help, the implementation of such a project would not be possible," said Mayor Joachim Weber.
In addition to the monastery building, the surrounding area is also being further developed. The focus is on four central areas: the monastery park, the monastery courtyard, the entrance and the access road to the monastery. "The monastery park will be extensively renovated, redesigned and provided with modern lighting so that the historic wall shines in new splendor," said State Secretary of the Interior Simone Schneider when handing over the funding notice in the Konz town hall. The state and federal government have been supporting the development of the Karthaus funding area since 2010 and, in addition to the monastery area, have financially supported the square at the Protestant church and the design of several streets and the banks of the Moselle.
