Information on the development of wind power in the Konz municipality

A large number of project developers from the wind energy sector are currently active in the Konz municipality, especially in the Upper Moselle. The aim of these companies is to secure areas at an early stage in order to possibly build wind turbines at a later date.

So far, the construction of wind turbines on these areas is not legally permitted. Therefore, the Konz municipal administration advises property owners not to enter into a contractual relationship with the project developers at this time - to their advantage.

Why can no wind turbines currently be built on these areas?

Wind turbines may only be built in areas that are approved for this purpose. This is regulated in the current land use plan. For this plan, all areas in the Konz collective municipality were examined for their suitability for wind power between 2015 and 2017. The study took into account the criteria for wind power that were valid at the time, e.g. minimum distances, landscape protection and economic efficiency. At the end of the process there was a concept that the collective municipality council approved in 2017 and which made suitable areas available, especially in the Konz-Oberemmel, Pellingen and Wiltingen areas.

Wind power is currently not permitted outside of these zones that were defined at the time. However, in recent years the legislature has relaxed many criteria to allow more wind power in the future. In principle, this is desirable. This is why wind power will be a new focus in the partial update of the land use plan in the coming years. However, it is important to keep an eye on not only individual areas and the interests of private companies, but also the entire development of the area. The municipal administration also takes into account the effects of possible new wind turbines on residents and the development of the building area.

Why does the municipal administration recommend not signing any contracts yet?

At the moment, companies are simply trying to secure land for themselves. This creates a patchwork of land that may later hinder or even prevent the development of wind turbines. In order to benefit financially, it makes sense to wait for the further development of land use planning. Because if the zones in which more wind power is possible are legally binding, you or the municipalities have more opportunities to find a project developer with good conditions.

The administration is planning information events for citizens on this topic. The details and dates will be announced at a later date.
