Better cycling infrastructure ensures greater safety and comfort
Many measures are currently being implemented in Konz to make cycling safer and more comfortable. As part of the commuter cycle route, the asphalt on the Moselle cycle path between Konz-Karthaus and Trier has been renewed, among other things. There is still some work to be done. In addition, this section of the route will be equipped with smart lighting in the coming months, which only switches on automatically when the cycle path is being used. This technology ensures lower energy consumption and reduces light pollution.

Work has also been and is being carried out on other sections along the commuter bike route. One example is Konstantinstrasse, where Berlin cushions are being installed on the road. The background: the street is becoming a bicycle street, which means that bicycles have priority over motorized traffic. The Berlin cushions are intended to slow down car traffic while cyclists can pass by the cushions.
Aside from the commuter cycle route promoted by the federal government, a lot is happening at the moment to make Konz more bicycle-friendly. The traffic flow on Wiltinger Strasse has been adjusted so that cyclists can use the one-way street in both directions at the Schillerstrasse junction. Another improvement is being implemented on Schwester-Marcellina-Weg: new, higher railings will ensure that cyclists travelling between Berendsborn and the city centre can now use the route over the Brienon Bridge safely. This section is particularly notable for the shared use of the path: cyclists are permitted on the pedestrian path as guests and are allowed to cycle at walking pace.
Also new are numerous bicycle parking facilities - not only in the town of Konz, but throughout the entire municipality. The facilities, which are funded by the Trier-Saarburg district, have been installed at busy locations, including sports fields, community centers and playgrounds. The new facilities keep bikes safe and easy to lock. Repair stations have also been set up in Onsdorf and Oberbillig.
"With these measures, we are making Konz even more bicycle-friendly and increasing the attractiveness of cycling. We are relying on a modern and safe infrastructure that not only facilitates commuter traffic, but also supports leisure traffic," said Mayor Joachim Weber.
The city of Konz will continue to invest in the expansion of cycling infrastructure in the coming months and years. The various aspects of the cycling concept, which was developed in 2019 with the participation of citizens, are being implemented step by step. One component is the widening of the cycle path along the Saar, which is currently being implemented as part of the ongoing construction work on Saarstrasse. In addition, three new charging stations for e-bikes will be installed in the coming months.
