Commuting quickly and safely by bike
Konz, October 24, 2024
Get out of the car and get on your bike! In November, construction work will begin in Konz for the commuter bike route. The aim is to make cycling safer and more attractive for working commuters and everyday cyclists. The bike-friendly route runs for around 5 kilometers in the city of Konz. Bicycle streets will be set up over a distance of 2.2 kilometers to give bicycle traffic priority over motorized traffic. In addition, the Moselle cycle path will be brought up to scratch over around 1.3 kilometers. On the remaining kilometers, markings, among other things, will be adjusted accordingly.
The commuter bike route runs from Konz train station along Bahnhofstrasse, Konstantinstrasse and a short stretch along Granastrasse and Karthäuser Strasse. It then leads along Parallelweg and Albanstrasse. Behind the monastery, it goes along Merzlicher Strasse to the Moselle cycle path. The route then continues via Trier to Schweich.
The route of the commuter bike route is shown in this map:
In the coming weeks, signs will be put up and Berlin cushions will be built in the middle of the road on Konstantinstrasse, so that motorized traffic is slowed down but cyclists can still get past easily. In addition, the surface layer on the Moselle cycle path will be renovated. For this work, the cycle path along the Moselle will be closed for a few weeks in the cooler season when fewer cyclists are on the road. The diversion will take place over the railway bridge and to Trier on the other side of the Moselle.
In order to make bicycle traffic along the commuter cycle route safer, there will be changes to the traffic routing for car drivers in some places: A one-way street will be set up in the parallel path between the Karthäuser Straße junction and the "Am Tunnel" junction in the direction of the city center. This measure is intended to prevent bypass traffic. A one-way street will also be set up further along the parallel path and on a section of Albanstraße, between the "Am Tunnel" street and Hubertusstraße - in the opposite direction (towards Karthaus station). Cyclists are allowed to ride in both directions; these one-way streets only apply to car drivers.
In the next few months, in addition to the commuter bike route, measures from the city of Konz's cycling concept will also be implemented, e.g. an improvement in traffic routing for cyclists on Wiltinger Straße and a higher railing on Schwester-Marcellina-Weg.
All measures are funded with around 1.4 million euros by the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport.
