Verbandsgemeinde of Konz is looking for lay judges
Conc, February 14, 2023
In the coming months, the lay judges will be elected nationwide for the term of office from 2024 to 2028. We are looking for women and men who will take part in adjudication in criminal matters as representatives of the people at the district court in Saarburg and the district court in Trier.
Applicants must live in the VG Konz and be at least 25 and no more than 69 years old on January 1, 2024. Eligible are German nationals who have a sufficient command of the German language.
In addition, lay judges should have social skills, i.e. be able to judge the actions of a person in their social environment. Knowledge of human nature, empathy and freedom from prejudice - even in extreme situations - are among the other skills that lay judges should have. They must have the courage to pass judgements, they need a sense of justice and a sense of responsibility, because the honorary lay judges decide on guilt, innocence and sentence together with the professional judges. Anyone who cannot accept personal responsibility for a prison sentence of several years or for an acquittal due to insufficient evidence should not seek the office of lay judge.
Previous legal knowledge is not required for the position, but applicants must be willing to invest time in order to further educate themselves about their participation and organizational possibilities. Ideally, they already have basic knowledge of criminal proceedings.
