New Konzer Saarterrassen opened
May 4, 2023
The fence is gone. With immediate effect, citizens can use the new Saar terraces on the Konzer Saarufer; the redesign of the area is complete. In good weather, the sun can be perfectly enjoyed on the terraced seating steps.
"The redesign of the banks of the Saar optically enhances the entrance to the city and makes it appear more modern," said Mayor Joachim Weber at the official opening. "Locals, cyclists and tourists now have more space to take a break and enjoy the beautiful Saar. The cycle path has also been expanded - initially in the front area by the bridge. In the second half of the year, LBM is expected to start expanding the rest of the Saarstrasse.”

In the coming weeks, the newly planted greenery will also develop on the Saar terraces. This increases the quality of stay even more. Grass was sown and perennials, bushes and trees were planted.
During the construction work it turned out that the local weeping willow, which was actually supposed to be preserved, had to be felled. In the past decades, the roots had grown out – instead of in depth. This had already affected the health of the tree. After experts predicted that the weeping willow would not last long, it was with a heavy heart that the city decided to cut down the old tree. The right decision: because the consequences of a fungal disease were visible in the wood after felling.
The city had the roots of the old willow removed to give a new tree more room to grow roots in the place. This newly planted tree is a Japanese cord tree. It is considered to be particularly heat-resistant and climate-resistant. The species grows up to 40 centimeters a year, is 15 to 20 meters high and has a broad crown. In addition, it offers insects a lot of food.
