Regional Democracy Conference: "House of Cards Europe?"

Regional Democracy Conference: "House of Cards Europe?"

Online discussion with Dr. Katarina Barley, Vice-President of the European Parliament and Dr. Joachim Schild, Professor of Comparative Government Studies at the University of Trier

On Thursday, November 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the second regional democracy conference entitled "House of cards Europe? - Effects of nationalist tendencies on the EU using the example of France" will take place. Together with Dr. Katarina Barley, Vice President of the European Parliament and Prof Dr. Joachim Schild from the University of Trier, we want to investigate the consequences of nationalist currents for the European Union.

In the run-off election for the office of French president in April, Marine Le Pen, candidate of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party, received more than 41 percent of the vote. The central concept of the RN is "French first!" France's withdrawal from the Schengen Agreement.

How do such nationalist currents emerge and what are their effects on the European Union? How do the nationalists justify their demands and what possibilities are there to counter this view? These and many other questions will be discussed during the event.

Organizers are the partnership for democracy in the VG Konz, partnership for democracy in the VG Saarburg-Kell, partnership for democracy in the VG Schweich, partnership for democracy in the VGs Hermeskeil and Ruwer and the partnership for democracy in the city of Trier. The transmission is supported by the open channel Trier.

The event can be viewed in the open channel (live broadcast and YouTube stream). For active participation, interested parties can dial into the zoom conference via the following link:
