Construction work on the banks of the Saar: Can the weeping willow be preserved?
The banks of the Saar in Saarstraße in Konz are currently being redesigned. Among other things, in the future there will be steps to invite people to linger. After delays in delivery, the foundations could be laid in the past few days. The delivery of the seat steps also arrived, which are to be attached to the foundation in a next step.
During the construction work, however, it became apparent that the roots of the weeping willow are very high. This does not make it impossible to move the seat steps further. However, there is a risk that the tree will die after the construction work is completed. It would then be very difficult to prepare the site for a new tree.
Due to this situation, the administration informed the city's specialist committee, the AG Baum, yesterday. Members will view the tree and root location on site. A decision on a felling has not yet been made.
If the weeping willow remains, the responsible engineering office will reschedule the laying of the stones. If it is felled, several new trees would be planted as a replacement and the tree trunk of the weeping willow would be used as a deadwood habitat - i.e. as a habitat for insects.
