War in the Ukraine: Information for helpers and refugees in the municipality of Konz
As in other municipalities in Germany, refugees from the Ukraine are currently seeking refuge in VG Konz. At the moment, this is mainly done through private contacts with family members and acquaintances who already live in the Konz community. The first assignments from the reception facility (Afa) in Trier have already been made. "Thanks to many private offers for long-term apartments, these people get a new home in the Konz municipality," says the first councilor of the VG Konz, Guido Wacht.
However, living space is only a first step for the refugees to feel comfortable here with us. They are therefore cared for at the social welfare office of the association municipality and get answers to their questions.
We receive many requests from people who want to help. Donations in kind are currently not required by the administration. However, we are looking for people who can volunteer to translate if there are language barriers. Please contact us at ukrainehilfe@konz.de.
In addition, the following Organizations in the municipality of Konz active:
- Caritas, Diocese & Diaconia : are looking for volunteers who not only want to help Ukrainian refugees in a variety of projects. Contact persons are: Thomas Zuche, Caritas Konz, Beethoven Gallery, zuche.thomas@caritas-region-trier.de , Horst Steffen, Dean's Office Konz-Saarburg, Martinstraße 22, horst.steffen@bistum-trier.de , Julia Begass, Diakonie, Karthauser Strasse 155, begass@diakoniehilft.net
- The Club "Oberbellja Muselkanner" from Oberbillig has launched a regional aid campaign for families from the region. At "Wir für die Ukraine" volunteers help the refugees with accommodation, as well as registration at the citizens' office or at the school. They also organize language courses in the VG Konz and collect donations in kind, for example for children from the Ukraine to attend school. Further information: http://wir-fuer-die-ukraine.de/

Private reception of refugees
If you would like to offer living space in the form of vacant apartments, please contact us at: ukrainehilfe@konz.de
The administration asks all people who have fled Ukraine and have already found private accommodation here to register with the Citizens' Office. This also enables the refugees to receive government support. People who have taken in refugees privately are asked to support them in registering.
Important note: If you are accepting people from Ukraine privately, please remember to also write their names on the mailbox. Otherwise, official mail will not arrive.
As soon as the registration is completed, refugees can apply for help, for example for food or medical care. The social welfare office is responsible for this assistance.
If refugees from Ukraine do not have permanent accommodation, they can go to the Reception facility for asylum seekers (AfA) of the state in Trier (Dasbachstraße 19, 54292 Trier).
Corona vaccinations
Corona vaccinations with "Sputnik" are not recognized in the European Union. Vaccination with a vaccine that is approved here is, however, easily possible, for example at the vaccination center in the Trier Exhibition Park. (In den Moselauen 1, 54294 Trier.) An appointment is not required. In addition, the vaccination mobile is on the road in the Trier-Saarburg district from Monday to Friday.
Child care and school attendance:
All children are entitled to child day care from the age of one until they start school. The children can be cared for in a day care center or by a day care worker together with other children. The offer applies to all children who are registered in the VG Konz with the citizens' office. The care can only be used if the children are vaccinated against measles. Children under the age of 2 must be vaccinated at least once. Another vaccination is necessary from the age of 2 years.
School attendance is compulsory for all children and young people who are resident in Rhineland-Palatinate (§56 SchulG). Ukrainian nationals who are minors and are staying here because of the war are allowed to attend school. Excluded are people who already have a school or vocational qualification. The schools are required by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to accept the students. Language support offers are planned. The Ministry of Education intends to announce further details in the coming days.
