"Of Divine, Holy, and Very Real Women"
A city tour through the inner city of Trier from a female point of view
On the commemoration day of Elisabeth von Thuringia, the working group of the municipal equal opportunity commissioners of the district of Trier-Saarburg invites you to a city tour from a female point of view. The aim is to find out how the depiction of historical female figures has influenced gender equality over the centuries and shaped the role model of women.
You walk in the footsteps of Celtic, Gallo-Roman, Frankish and Jewish ancestors. Goddesses are presented, legends of saints are questioned, violence, persecution, the concealment of female cultural achievements and the hard life of poor women are discussed. The city guide Angelika Kiebel deals with the well-known historical perspective, which is limited to male rulers, and focuses on the diversity of female cultural history in Trier. She gives answers to the questions:
- What male interests did the control of canonizations and Marian devotion serve in the long history of women in Christianity?
- Over the centuries, how has Christian art served to shape questionable ideals of women that served to manipulate and subjugate?
The tour enlivens and honors the fate of remarkable, strong women from all social classes of Trier's city history and makes it clear: the power of women has remained unbroken and has produced great achievements in the past.
We start over 1:30 p.m. in the small courtyard of St. Irminen and end around 5:30 p.m. in the Welschnonnenkirche. In between, you always have the opportunity to sit down and warm up at various places to visit, for example in the casino at Kornmarkt. The event is free of charge. The 3 G rules apply (vaccinated, recovered, tested, please provide proof).
