Climate Protection Initiative Conc

Climate protection initiative of the city and VG Konz

As part of a current climate protection initiative by the federal government, greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions are to be reduced by up to 40% by 2020. The aim of this forward-looking initiative is to reduce pollutant emissions in Germany below the 1990 level. For this reason, the federal government launched a funding program from mid-2008 for the creation of municipal climate protection concepts. Cities and municipalities can use the grants for professional external service providers who effectively carry out the accompanying advice on the implementation of climate protection measures in social and public institutions.

Thanks to the energy-efficient measures implemented in 2012 and 2013 (in the areas of heating and lighting) in the buildings of the city of Konz, the Konz association of municipalities and the local communities, CO2 savings of around 210 tons per year have so far been achieved.

Follow-up project for the implementation of the climate protection sub-concept

In cooperation with all of its municipalities, the Konz association had a partial climate protection concept drawn up for a total of 107 buildings with a total building area of approx. This concept was the basis for the realization of structural and user-specific measures and also the basis for the development of climate protection management.

The structural measures were subdivided into short-term, medium-term and long-term measures. The investigation report covered electricity, such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Short and medium-term measures were largely carried out in the years 2012 to 2013 with an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of around 191 tons. A climate protection manager was hired with support from federal funds for the period from 02/01/2012 to 01/31/2014 to provide support and technical implementation.

In connection with the successful implementation of essential measures of the sub-concept, it became apparent that additional measures that supplement the concept would be useful and efficient (e.g. lighting controls, remote meter reading in energy controlling). Furthermore, the remaining measures from the sub-concept had to be implemented for which no budgetary funds could be made available up to now.

The follow-up measure was carried out in the period from June 1st, 2014 to May 31st, 2015 with renewed funding from federal funds from the climate protection initiative.

After implementation, the CO2 savings will be around 100 tons per year.
