Water renaturation in the VG Konz

Water body maintenance - body of water III. Order:

For the maintenance of the waters III. Order - usually all streams with or without names - is the responsibility of the association of municipalities. However, this maintenance obligation does not include trees or shrubs that have fallen into the water. The respective owner of the property on which the trees or shrubs stood is responsible for this.

Water body renaturation:

Streams, rivers and flood plains fulfill many different functions in the ecosystem. They are the lifelines of the landscape and thus enrich the landscape. They provide habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna and serve as a place for people to relax.

In addition to the main feature of water runoff, the water bodies also hold back flood waters until a certain event. The occurrence of flood events is a consequence of the loss of natural water reservoirs, which is caused by various circumstances:

  • Water development and straightening, sealing, development of flood areas,
  • Forest clearing as well as non-local land management in the floodplains

The natural functions of the water bodies and their floodplains were lost as a result of this redesign of the streams and rivers, which was adapted to the needs of the people.

In order to achieve the original functions of the water body, the administration of the Konz association of municipalities is developing a water body concept for the area of the Konz association of municipalities in close cooperation with the Structure and Approval Directorate North.

The aim of the water concept is to examine the quality of the water structure and to improve it if necessary.

The following parameters are examined:

  •  running development
Is the course straight, composed or moving?
  • longitudinal profile
Is the water body free to flow or is this obstructed by transverse structures, falls, piping, etc.?
  • cross section
Does the course of the creek bed appear flat, bordered or deeply indented in a natural way?
  • sole structure
What materials does the sole substrate have? Is sole substrate present at all?
  • bank structure
Does the bank vegetation consist of suitable trees such as alder, ash and willow, or is there bank vegetation with non-native trees?
  • water environment
What land use is adjacent to the shore area?

The water structure quality serves as a generally binding assessment basis for water inspection, water body planning and the evaluation of care measures. Improving the quality of the structure of the water body is accompanied by a further improvement in the quality of the water body, since the entry of pollutants is reduced through the creation of "buffer zones" (edge strips) and the self-cleaning power of the body of water is improved.

At the same time, the ecological continuity of the waters for fish and other small creatures is improved or restored.
After the water concept has been drawn up and the subsequent coordination with the Structure and Approval Directorate North, Regional Office for Water Management, Waste Management, Soil Protection Trier is planned, the implementation as a whole or in sub-projects via an application within the framework of the "Action Blue" funding program of the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate in to lead the way. The applicant is the municipality of Konz with technical support from the SGD Nord, RegWAB Trier.

The main focal points in the water body concept of the Konz association of municipalities are:

  • " Domain road/Klosterbach" in the Konz area,
  • "Konzer Bach" from the source near Krettnach to the school and sports center Konz including "Kommlinger Bach" as an inlet,
  • "Mannebach", "Mausbach" and Albach in the Tawern area,
  • "Oberemmler Bach" from the source near Krettnach to the confluence with the Saar near Wiltingen

The "Aubach" renaturation in the Pellingen and Franzenheim area was completed in 2012 in cooperation with the Trier-Land association of municipalities.
